Meeting details
Hackney Lib Dems; The Political Hot Potato - USA Friend or Foe? Speaker Jonathan Fryer.
(Thursday, April 26, 2007)
Meeting type: | Social event |
Date: | Thursday, April 26, 2007 |
Time: | 8.00pm - 10.00pm |
We thought we would have a break from Pizza and introduce Potatos instead!
This is a social event with a politcal theme. We start at 8pm with a dinner of Jacket Potatos with fillings. Then later at around 9pm the topic is introduced and then we have questions, answers and opinions. The cost which includes the dinner is £8, £5 for those on low incomes.
We are delighted to announce that Jonathan Fryer has found a gap in his busy reporting schedule for the BBC World Service to speak at our Political Hot Potato event on the vexed theme of "USA Friend or Foe?"
Even with the best will in the world, our opposition to the war in Iraq would, had we been in power, would have severely strained anglo-US relations. Yet by siding with the US instead the UK has suffered a terrible blow to it's international reputation around the world.
As to where we go from here, questions remain about whether the US can adjust to the realities of it's lessening power in the world, and whether a Clinton presidency will mark a significant change over it's predecessor, should she get elected. And of course there is a question of how the UK should redefine it's relationship with the US after the seemingly inevitable defeat in Iraq.
A political hot potato indeed! And no doubt we all have opinions on this.
You are welcome to come along and join in the debate.
