, E5 9JN.&nbsp\;We are delighted that Malcolm Bruce MP hasagreed to speak
at this event. He is chair of theParliamentary International DevelopmentCo
mmittee\, visited the region to meet Burmeserefugees on the Thai-Burma bor
der prior to thecyclone. We are also delighted that our Hackney councillorD
awood Akhoon who was born in Burma has alsoagreed to speak at this event.B
urma is the largest country by geographical area inmainland Southeast Asia
.It was most recently in the news last May because ofcyclone Nardis\, that
left tens of thousands dead anda million homeless\, a natural disaster ma
de muchworse by the failure of the military junta to warn orevacuate its p
eople.Last September there was the &ldquo\;Saffron rebellion&rdquo\; inres
ponse to the Burmese government&rsquo\;s unannouncedremoval of fuel subsid
ies\, as recommended by theIMF and the World Bank\, which caused fuel pric
esto double and let to widespread demonstrations anda brutal clampdown by
the government. So the last 12 months have been particularly hardfor the Bu
rmese\, but the problems of Burma go backfurther. Burma has been run by a
militarygovernment since 1962. A popular rebellion in 1988led to elections
in 1990 where the National Leaguefor Democracy (NLD)\, the party of Aung
San SuuKyi\, won 392 out of a total 489 seats\, but theelection results we
re annulled and Aung San SuuKyi has been under house arrest for most of th
e timesince then.So what\, if anything can be done? Hackney LiberalDemocra
ts invite you to join us for a discussionabout this at our &ldquo\;Pasta a
 nd Politics&rdquo\; event.
