Grimsby and Cleethorpes Liberal Democrats - Building a Liberal Force with Michael Meadowcroft
(Monday, July 30, 2018)

Meeting type:Public Meeting
Date:Monday, July 30, 2018
Time:7.00pm - 9.00pm
Description:

Grimsby and Cleethorpes Liberal Democrats are pleased to announce a special event with former Liberal MP Michael Meadowcroft on the 30th of July in Grimsby Michael served as MP for Leeds West between 1983 and 1987. A critic of the SDP/Liberal merger which formed the Liberal Democrats, Meadowcroft would go on to become the first leader of the ‘continued Liberal Party’. However, in 2007 Meadowcroft joined with the Liberal Democrats, citing such import issues as the stance that the party took on the Iraq war, and it’s pro-European identity as his reason for joining in an article he wrote for LibDem Voice.
Michael has a long history in British politics, having joined the Liberal party in 1958, and becoming a Leeds city Councillor in 1968, and a West Yorkshire county Councillor between 1973 and 1976, and again in 1981- 1983.
A ‘safe’ Labour seat, Meadowcroft was able to take Leeds West for the Liberals in 1983 by running a strong constituency campaign. Meadowcroft sat as MP between 1983 and 1987, losing the seat to Labour. It was the following year he was appointed to the negotiating team for the Liberal/SDP merger. However, as a critic of the SDP, Meadowcroft left the negotiations and formed the ‘continuting Liberal Party’ in 1989. With the new decade, Michael has been involved with numerous electoral missions to over 30 countries.
