Two handy sites: Handset Detection and UserVoice
Sunday, March 6th, 2011The number one wish on the FlockTogether UserVoice pages is for a mobile version of this site.
The problem with this is that there are a LOT of mobile devices out there with a wide range of capabilities.
Fortunately, the good people at Handset Detection have come up with an incredibly simple API that means FlockTogether knows if you’re looking at it with a mobile, and knows what the capability is (screensize etc.) if you’re using a mobile.
(There are cleverer ways of doing this with installations like Tera-WURFL and WURFL – but they kept crashing my server so I gave up).
So Handset Detection it is. All I need to do now is code the mobile version of the site!
PS: Hat-tip to browscap too – which I’m also using and which also gives useful information about the browser looking at your page.
