We are delighted that Malcolm Bruce MP has
agreed to speak at this event. He is chair of the
Parliamentary International Development
Committee, visited the region to meet Burmese
refugees on the Thai-Burma border prior to the
cyclone.
We are also delighted that our Hackney councillor
Dawood Akhoon who was born in Burma has also
agreed to speak at this event.
Burma is the largest country by geographical area in
mainland Southeast Asia.
It was most recently in the news last May because of
cyclone Nardis, that left tens of thousands dead and
a million homeless, a natural disaster made much
worse by the failure of the military junta to warn or
evacuate its people.
Last September there was the “Saffron rebellion” in
response to the Burmese government’s unannounced
removal of fuel subsidies, as recommended by the
IMF and the World Bank, which caused fuel prices
to double and let to widespread demonstrations and
a brutal clampdown by the government.
So the last 12 months have been particularly hard
for the Burmese, but the problems of Burma go back
further. Burma has been run by a military
government since 1962. A popular rebellion in 1988
led to elections in 1990 where the National League
for Democracy (NLD), the party of Aung San Suu
Kyi, won 392 out of a total 489 seats, but the
election results were annulled and Aung San Suu
Kyi has been under house arrest for most of the time
since then.
So what, if anything can be done? Hackney Liberal
Democrats invite you to join us for a discussion
about this at our “Pasta and Politics” event.
