Hackney Lib Dems dinner: Keeping the Tories in line. The Lib Dem commitment to International Development, guest speakers Lynne Featherstone MP and Anuja Prashar
(Thursday, November 27, 2014)

Meeting type:Social event
Date:Thursday, November 27, 2014
Time:8.30pm - 10.30pm
Description:

Following the Hackney Lib Dem AGM, the doors will open to everyone who wants to come along at 8.30pm.

You can join us for a buffet meal of superb Vietnamese food (with good vegetarian options) and our very special guest speakers Lynne Featherstone MP and Anugar Prashar from the British Union of Indian Liberal Democrats (BUILD).

Lynne Featherstone MP has won awards for her excellent work as a home office minister in bringing into law gay marraige, and since she later become minister for Overseas Development she has continued supporting LGBT+ rights in other countries.

One policy that in 2010 both the Liberal Democrats and Conservatives agreed on in entering government was to support a commitment for the government to spend 0.7% GDP on international aid. Since then the Tories have been worried about losing votes to UKIP and have gone cold in this policy. It is the LIberal Democrats who want to implement it and we are introducing a private members bill to enshrine this in law.

The right wing media will tell us this is not popular, so how do we make a popular case for overseas aid in a time of austerity? Come along and join the debate.

We are also delighted that Anujar will also be our guest speaker at this event. She is chair of Build, see http://www.libdemvoice.org/30050-30050.html, where she has been very successful in networking with many Asian based organisations and individuals from which many turned up at a recent film show at the National Liberal Club looking at people smuggling and how mysogyny is being challenged in India.

This event is being held in the Ahn Dao Vietnamese restuarant at 106 Kingsland Road, Shoreditch. Entrance is £15. You can purchase tickets in advance on the website; http://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/keeping-the-tories-in-line-the-lib-dem-commitment-to-international-development-guest-speakers-lynne-tickets-14403345795?aff=eorg

The nearest Overground station is Hoxton which is 5 minutes walk away. The Overground comes from Highbury aand Islington in the North and a good number of stops in South London.

The nearest tube is Old Street, followed by a 15 minute walk or a 243 bus. Or you can go to Liverpool Street and get the 149 or 242 bus, or from Aldgate and get the 67 bus.

We think this will be a great evening and we look forward to seeing you. And if you know any friends interested in coming, then bring them along too!
