Two handy sites: Handset Detection and UserVoice

Sunday, March 6th, 2011

The number one wish on the FlockTogether UserVoice pages is for a mobile version of this site.

The problem with this is that there are a LOT of mobile devices out there with a wide range of capabilities.

Fortunately, the good people at Handset Detection have come up with an incredibly simple API that means FlockTogether knows if you’re looking at it with a mobile, and knows what the capability is (screensize etc.) if you’re using a mobile.

(There are cleverer ways of doing this with installations like Tera-WURFL and WURFL – but they kept crashing my server so I gave up).

So Handset Detection it is.  All I need to do now is code the mobile version of the site!

PS: Hat-tip to browscap too – which I’m also using and which also gives useful information about the browser looking at your page.

Flock Together has signed up to help get rid of IE6 #ie6countdown

Saturday, March 5th, 2011

IE6 has been a complete bane for this website. It makes any kind of design a nightmare because it’s so dated and non-compliant with standards.  It’s still 5.52% of Flock Together visits.

Fortunately, Microsoft has seen the light and is working to get rid of it.

They’ve kindly provided some code which only appears to IE6 users asking them to upgrade.

If you want to see what Flock Together looks like under IE6, then go here –

Still not a thing of beauty (and IE6 seems to be having quite a big argument with the Facebook box), but at least there’s a nice big message telling people to change browser.
